If you’ve just stumbled upon this article, I recommend you start from the beginning by clicking the Part 1 link below. For easy reading, I’ve broken this blog post into three parts:
Part 1: Hyper-V Server 2012 Installation and Importing VDI-in-a-Box
Part 2: VDI-in-a-Box Initial Configuration < YOU ARE HERE!
Part 3: Windows 8 Image and Template Creation
Select Another computer and enter the DNS name of the Hyper-V Server. Click OK:
When you first connect, you will notice the VIAB appliance has already been imported (vdiManager…). In the right navigation, let’s select Hyper-V Settings to change the default paths for new virtual machines:
If you have unformatted local storage, you can use Computer Manager or Server Manager in Windows Server to remotely connect to the Hyper-V Server and format the local storage volumes. Change the Virtual Hard Disks path to E:\Virtual Hard Disks:
Click Virtual Machines and change the default path to E:\. Click OK to save changes:
Next, we’ll want to change the vdiManager VM to automatically start-up. Select the VM and click Settings on the right navigation:
Select Automatic Start Action and choose Always start. Click OK to save changes:
With the VM selected, click Start on the right navigation to power it on:
Right click the VM and select Connect to open the console:
Once the vdiManager has fully powered on, you will see the DHCP address that was automatically obtained. From here we will go to a web browser and perform the remainder of the configurations:
Enter the IP Address that was automatically assigned and visible from the console in Internet Explorer. Click Continue to this website to accept the security certificate error:
Enter the default credentials (vdiadmin / kaviza) and click Log on:
Accept the terms of use and click Next:
Review and click Get Started:

Enter the static IP address of your Hyper-V Server along with administrative credentials (domain admin for this configuration). Click Next:
Select the datastore and network virtual switch and click Next:
Select Create a new VDI-in-a-Box grid and click Next:
Select Microsoft Active Directory and enter the IP Address of a domain controller, followed by administrative credentials. Click Next:
Select No for reserving a dedicated IP, we will walk through this process next. Click Done:
Click Continue
Close the import new VM window, we’ll come back to this:
Select the Admin section and click Advanced Properties:
Scroll down and enter a grid IP address and optionally the external address if you already know it. Click OK to save settings:
Click Grid Maintenance:
Click OK:
Select the Servers section and click the hyperlink for the Hyper-V Server’s IP Address:
Click Deactivate:
Click Confirm:
Deactivation may take a minute. Once the server says deactivated, click the hyperlink again:
Under VDI Manager network settings, click Modify:
Select Static IP Address and change the IP as appropriate for the VDI manager. Click OK to save changes:
After a minute or two, the VDI manager will reboot and your web browser will be redirected to the new IP address. Click Continue to the certificate warning:
Login again with the default credentials (vdiadmin / kaviza):
Click Continue:
Close the import new VM window:
Select Server and click the hyperlink again:
Click Activate:
Click Confirm:
Select the Admin section and click Manage SSL Certificate:
For this demo, I will be using a self-signed certificate with vdi.ws12.com for the DNS name. Select Self-Signed Certificate and click Generate:

I’m trying to get my VDI up and running, starting from scratch, using your notes, so far looks great. Question: under the admin tab (web) I do not have the icon called “manage ssl certificate” – How do display? thanks!
This blog serious was on VIAB Project Curacao, which was a tech preview at the time of writing. It has now released (v5.3) and you will now see identical functionality as I covered in this blog post.
Thanks for stopping by!
